Nurse Practitioner Advisory Committee of New Zealand (NPAC-NZ) recommends that any nurse thinking about becoming an NP should find a mentor. There are a number of ways to do this.
How to find a mentor
NPAC-NZ asked its four constituent nursing organisations to establish mentor support systems to help aspiring Nurse Practitioners prepare for the Nursing Council of New Zealand (NCNZ) Nurse Practitioner endorsement process.
A mentor helps applicants refine and develop their written application, and prepare for the NCNZ interview. Training days for this mentorship role have been facilitated by NPAC-NZ and NCNZ in 2003, 2006 and 2010.
The chart below outlines who to contact via national nursing organisations. If you have any problems, please contact the Administration support for NPAC-NZ – Georgina Araboglos – email: georginaa@nzno.org.nz.

2. Workshops for NP mentors
NPAC-NZ sometimes facilitates workshops for:
• people wishing to be mentors for NP candidates; and
• people wishing to learn about developing the NP role (this includes information for employers, and nurses thinking about starting the NP journey)
To find out about upcoming workshops, please contact the Administration support for NPAC-NZ – Georgina Araboglos – email: georginaa@nzno.org.nz.
3. NP mentor guidelines
The Nurse Practitioner Advisory Committee of New Zealand (NPAC-NZ) developed these guidelines (PDF, 370Kb) to provide a mutually agreed framework for mentorship between the NP candidate and the mentor, and to prevent any misinterpretations of the mentoring relationship.
